The Winner! The one with the coverlines on the left (in the top right corner of the pictures in the post) was a clear winner with 12 votes, Therefore, i will be using this sort of layout for my magazine. I think that this is because this layout looks more professional and is like the cover of the Rolling Stone magazine which was the most popular in my audience research too so it would make sense that that sort of style was popular here too. Second Placethe first one (which I couldn't have used anyway because the picture was a long shpt instead of a mid- shot which is not used in magazines so wouldn't look realistic) got 3 votes in total (my step-mother shared it and got a 2 and a 1 vote) so was no-where near as popular as the second one despite being fairly similar. I think that people voted for number 2 instead of this one in general because number two is much more professional and is neat, making it easier to read. Third PlaceThe third one didn't get any votes. I think that this is because you cannot see much of the background and because the way that i have presented it makes it look as though it's not as professional as the other two.
My friends and i went to a place in Ashton called Portland Basin to do some exploring and to get some test shots for the new camera that my friend got for christmas which i might use for my final pictures on the magazine. My friend took some of these pictures to show me how to ue the camera and i took the rest both on the camera and on my phone in different places including: - Clayton Vale - Reddish Vale Country Park - Daisy Nook Country Park - Alton Towers Theme park - Portland Basin the pictures above are the ones that my friend Bradley took when showing me how to use the camera properly and how to get good angles. they may not be indie but they were still test shots forthe camera, a Nikon 3300D camera. Here are the pictures that i took both with Bradley's camera and my phone, a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge.
I took these pictures with my phone to test the quality of my rear phone camera and to make sure that I could take different types of shots. I was actually shooting for a short film that I am currently making. I think that these went well and it means that i now have the flexibility of using either the Canon 1000D camera or my own phone. This widens for my horizons for what I can use to take my final pictures. I used a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge to take these pictures. It has a 16MP rear camera which is remarkably good for a phone camera and it makes my pictures look really professional, videos too!
These are my drafts for the layout of my final magazine. Number 3 however would not be suitable because it's not a mid shot so that is already ruled out. Number 1 and Number two will be put on my social media platforms and my friends, family and other followers will vote on the layout that they prefer. I will then take their opinions into account when i am making my final magazine!
- October Overview
- Double Page Spread Analysis - Test Shots 1 These test shots are not ideal for the final project as there are none of me or Tom looking straight at the camera and most of them are not mid- shots which is what is usually on a magazine's cover. I think that some of the images might be good for the contents page as they do have the independent feel to them as they're on brick walls and things like that. I also look quite awkward in some of the photos as O was with someone i didn't really know very well so i didn't really want to let go. Therefore those ones are not helpful to use. On most indie magazines, there are usually more people whereas i was alone. I think that it would add to the Indie theme if i were with at least two other people. The Locations of the pictures were very reminiscent of the indie genre as they were outside at places like the train station and in tunnels which to me reflects the independence of the indie genre. The equiptment i used to take these shots was a Canon 1000D camera and a tripod. I used the tripod to steady the camera whilst i took the shots and experimented with different shot angles.
SimilaritiesEither dark or light colours for the background that makes the writing stand out well. There is also a big picture on at least one side of the double page spread. All of the people in the photos have blank faces or only slight smiles which reflects the indie genre which is simple and fairly serious whilst also being about the artist's own style. The arms crossed or hands in pockets pose is rather casual which again reflects the independent genre. The bold titles in a larger font stand out against the smaller font of the article writing. The writing is also in neat columns so that it is easy to read. Most of the band pictures are also mid-shots. DifferencesThe pictures of the band members tend to be in different places on the pages, some are on the left, some in the right etc. the layout of the columns is also quite different in each of the spreads as some of them are close together on one page of the spread whereas others are on both sides in the middle. The colour schemes also different in some minuscule ways as in some of them, the vaccines on in particular, there is an element of blue added into the spread which makes it visceral and catches the audience's attention, possibly even more than the others. Codes and Conventions of an Indie Double Page SpreadFrom this analysis, my double page spread will have:
- either a dark or light background - a big picture of the band - blank faces - mid-shots - Crossed arms/ Hands in pockets - Larger Font for Titles - Neat columns These are all the things that i posted here in October
